What Heavy Bag should I buy?
My options are:
Century Wavemaster Xxl - $225
Century Water filled 125lb hanging bag, but I would have to
buy a hanging stand also - $250
I am 6' 240lbs with a fairly hard hit.
The 70lb bag I had would not hold up and swung all over the place.
Any help appreciated.
I am doing Muay Thai and grappling for Mma Training.
Well the only place I can hang it is in the garage screwed into the joists. My wife is tired of the house shaking when I hit it.
Yeah, its a rent house.
I could rig up a military duffle with foam and pebbles for a ground and pounder right? Is the wavemaster XXL an okay bag? My only other option is the stand as when the house shook it was a 75lb bag.
I prefer hanging bags, they feel more natural and provide some swing (which allows you to work on timing). If you have room somewhere hanging a bag is always the best choice (I don't like stands because I rotate completely around a bag while I work it).
If you don't have space, or a place to hang it from then I would go with the freestanding bag.
With a choice between hanging bag on a stand, or a freestanding bag, I would go with a free standing bag.
Really the stands get in the way more than they help.
You want some swing in your bag, so you can work on hitting it as it going away, putting together combinations with the proper speed, learning when to use short strikes (such as elbows and knees when the bag is close or coming towards you) and when to use longer shots (jabs and crosses as the bag is moving away).
The bonus of a swinging bag is that you can take it off to work ground and pound, and also use it to work for dynamic lifts for takedowns and slams.
(see Rhadi Ferguson's heavy bag work out for grappling it is awesome)

So if you have a place to hang (hell even a sturdy tree branch) that can give you room to move around the bag, (bring it in when you are done). You can gain a lot more with a hanging bag than you can a free standing bag as far as workout wise.
We work a drill with a 200lbs bag where a partner holds it up, you shoot, slam the bag, and work your ground and pound from there.
Hanging bags are the way to go.
Freestanding bags are mainly for when space is a major issue and you just want to work strikes.
Well alot of the shaking will go away with a water filled bag, and heavier one.
The shaking mainly comes from lighter bags as they bounce around on the joists.
A heavier bag will have less up and down motion and won't bounce and shake the rest of the house, and the water filled bags dissapate much of the shock of the blow. (Less structural noise).
Sand and pebbles in a duffle isn't ideal for ground and pound, but can work as a cheap way to go. The problem is you could potentially injure your hands if you put too much behind the blows. (Sand compacts and can become like cement). But it can work.
As far as free standing bags, Wavemasters are pretty much top of the line in my opinion. I really like the hanging heavybags as well.
Honestly, if you are willing to spend the money a banana bag would be 10 times better for Muay Thai. Also called Thai style heavy bags. You get one of those and they will hardly move at all, not to mention give you a full 6ft or so of bag to kick and punch. You can get them waterfilled too. Here are some random links, with a little searching you could find better.

Obviously the heavier the better, but even a 100lbs banana bag doesn't move like a shorter heavy bag.
I think you will find any water filled hanging bag that is over 100lbs will be pretty good for not shaking the house when you hit it. A good way to tell is to go to your local sports store, (they usually have bags hanging up) and find a comparable bag and wail on it, see how much movement it does.
Side to side movement is fine (doesn't shake) where as up and down movement (from the bag bouncing) will cause the shaking noise you are talking about.
Wavemasters are awesome bags, both their freestanding and hanging bags. Water filled bags are awesome.
Good luck, hope that helps!
