Can I use the "Ultra vibrato" (Vibrating trem) Trick with heavy strings?
This is a trick used by several shred guitarists and the like, including Steve Vai, where you push the tremolo arm down on one side of the bridge or other, then allow it to snap back. The result is a vibrating or trilling sound. I'm using a strat that's set to float, but I use 11-56 strings and five springs. Do I actually need a floyd rose, or is it my tougher strings keeping me from getting that effect? The tension on my bridge is very tight compared to a guitar with lighter ones (Obviously) But does this matter? By the way, I also play a lot of blues, hence my heavy strings inspired by SRV's amazing 13-56 sets.
It's more down to tension than trem style. 5 springs on a Fender isn't going to bounce. The standard Fender trem is not quite as smooth, even set to float, as Floyds or Wilkinsons either. I have a guitar with a wilkinson, and I can get the effect on that with 3 springs but not 4. It might work if you went to lighter strings, and therefore fewer springs. I use 11s as well, are you sure you need 5 springs?
