Could a Jian and a Spatha be used interchangeably? (swords)?
For whatever reason, if you were trained in one or both of these weapons, should the need arise. could you use either?
Though I don't have any experience wielding either weapon, I have studied the design and historic use of both weapons. I think with some of the older Jian, it might be possible. They were shorter with thicker blades. The ones created during the Ming dynasty and later more closely resembled the cut-and-thrust swords of the Renaissance.
My guess is that there are significant differences, but if you'd handled a variety of swords, the transition would be relatively easy.
