How do the ATA get away with teaching TKD incorrectly and promoting students who are not Eligible for the rank?
I was on holidays in the US a few weeks ago and i sat in on a few ATA classes and i could not believe the amount of money they charge for the classes and rank testings and the appalling standard of skill from people who were holding ranks like 3rd degree Black Belts.
I have some experience in Martial Arts particularly TKD and found these classes to be appalling.
It did not even look like TKD they were teaching but more like some kind of circus act gone wrong.
How do these people get away with conning others out of money like this ?
I actually feel sorry for the students
Because people in today's world do not want to truly earn something anymore when they can dish out money just get it handed to them. It is sad but is a fact.
To be honest all of us legitimate martial artists are to blame for this but some of it can be blamed on the letigious society we live in as well. If these ATA morons would have opened schools in the 1970's through the late 1980's like they have now they would have been given a visit by the real black belts in those towns, beaten up and embarassed in front of their students. Today if you tried this you would end up in jail. These ATA people wont even go to tournaments outside of their own organization because they will get beaten.
The ATA is a cult. They convince you that you are learning a legitimate art when it is not. They make sure you do not train at other schools because they don't want you to learn they are a joke. They hold their own closed events so that they can proclaim their students world champions but yet these same champions can fight at open events because they always lose. They please the parents by handing out rank like candy for money and the parents have no idea their child is being ripped off as well as they are because they keep the kids "happy".
In short I have visited over 20 ATA schools in the US over the past 15 years and not a single one would let me "join in" on the sparring sessions even though they called them "open sparring" in their schedules. They just didn't want me to show what is real.
I even went to a local ATA school in my uniform and told them I was there to work out with them and was told no. I sat and watched classes and the instructor was so nervous that he kept making all kinds of mistakes. His students saw this and he lost some credibility. While I was sitting and watching I had conversations with the parents and they asked that instructor to let me spar with the students so they could see what I was explaining to them about how the ATA is not real martial arts. At this point I was asked to leave and threatend with police action if I did not. I smiled, told the guy thank you for proving my point that the ATA is a joke, and I left. I think more legitimate black belts should get together, go to the ATA schools and do this. That particular school closed down six months after I left and my school (run by one of my students in that town) got 25 students from it. Everyone of them were terrible, including the black belts, and they all started at white belt. Today 15 of them are left and have developed real skill. They all talk badly about the ATA openly which is something they are qualified to do since they trained there.
The ATA is the biggest joke but there are some other schools following on their heels like Mile High Karate, Premier Martial Arts and American Self Defense Studios to name a few.
Edit - energy...hate to tell you this but even the ATA's so called Eternal Grandmaster Lee was alive it was a well known mcdojang...but you are right that it has just became worse since his passing. Lee was a well known con artist in the martial arts and sold rank to many people even in the 1970's and 80's. They were a joke back then as well among legitimate circles. In the early 1970's a few of the ATA's top black belts attempted to compete in the USKA tournament circles and were beaten badly. They never returned.
