Hydrogeology question: grain size medium and permeability?
I'm studying for my Hydrogeology exam tomorrow and cannot seen to find a legitimate answer for this question in my notes, the book or the internet...
Why does a larger grain size medium have a larger permeability?
Thanks for your help.
Permeability is controlled by several factors - including:
1)extent and nature of fractures
2) porosity of the rock - how much is open space
3) grain size
4) Consistency of grain size
5) Shape of grains.
If other factors are equal, the larger grain size medium will have a greater permeability because:
a) the open channels are larger and less likely to be blocked by particulates in the water
b) the channels are larger so the liquid is exposed to less friction from the walls of the channels
c) less surface is exposed so surface tension effects are less
Think of a large diameter pipe which is filled with cannon balls, and one which is filled with marbles.
Both pipes have about the sames amount of open space - 27% assuming close packing of spheres - but the pipe with cannon balls will offer less resistance to flowing water because the individual channels are larger.
