why is the shinai longer than the bokken?
first, someone stated bokkens are safe way to practice. NO they are not safe, that was not why they were created. bokkens were created because the samurais did not want to damage their swords in practice, so they got bokkens as replacements. (the added bonus was that there were no cuts from light accidental hits) But bokkens have been known to kill and kill well.
bokkens are not restricted by any rules so it could be any length, but usually people would like to order in the authentic sword's length. Shinai however is restricted by rules and it's for a competitive purpose. Because it's for a sport people would like every advantage that they could get thus they go for the longer shinai.
