Do you practice firearms training at a gun range or do you have your own place outdoors?
What would be the advantages and disadvantages of practicing at your own spot outdoors.
someone tell Steel Rain that you can't "dry fire" all firearms.
but i do understand the message your trying to convey
I do both. I go out to my folk's, they have land that I can shoot on, and I go to the range. Because of the lay of the land and the need for a suitable backstop, target shooting at my folk's is limited to about 125 yards. This is the only reason that I go to the range- to shoot longer distances.
The big advantage to shooting on your own land is that you can do whatever you want whenever you want. Movement drills, quick draw, rapid fire, shoot targets, cans, spinners, or whatever you want to shoot at. The range that I usually go to is strictly a "bench type" range. You can shoot standing, and off of the bench, rapid fire is only allowed when the range is not busy. Position shooting is generally not possible. There is another range that I can go to for position shooting and quick draw/rapid fire, but it is much farther away so I don't go there very often..
I also like to shoot at my folk's place because I can go down to my targets whenever I want, without holding up anyone else, and shoot at "any" range that I like. Since the shooting is at no more than 125 yards I rarely bring my spotting scope, just walk on down if I can't see the bullet holes through my rifle scope- or am using iron sights.
So for me the only advantage to a shooting range is...more range.
