Foot pain, need answers please!!?

18 year old female, have had bunions on both feet for as long as I can remember. Causing a lot of pain and annoyance especially on my right foot. I also have Chondromalacia Patella in my right knee, so wearing foot insoles for the bunion is causing too much pain in my knee.

I have tried gel pads, insoles, medication, different shoes and I always wear trainers or slippers (no high heels).

I'm finding my job as a Care Assistant a nightmare pain wise, between my foot and knee.
My GP has reffered me to see a Podiatrist to look at my feet.

I am wondering since I have tried most conservative treatments for my bunions and the pain has just been getting worse, what will the Podiatrist do next?

I am considering having surgery but I will have to see if that is an option for me??

Can anyone give me any information, Internet has not been so helpful
Thanks

Seeing a podiatrist is a good place to start. They will examine the feet and make recommendations for you. Most podiatrists will not recommend surgery in the beginning and will recommend more conservative approaches. One of those being custom made orthotics for the shoes and perhaps specific shoes to be worn that will support the feet more appropriately. In the meantime you can try orthotics to see if they help. For about twenty dollars you should be able to pick up a pair of either Dr. Schol's or Spenco arch supports at a local supermarket, medical supply house, or pharmacy. Place them in your shoes and see if they help. If they stop the pain then perhaps that is all that you need at this time. If they help partially then you are going to need custom made orthotics. There are specific exercises for the knee that will help you but work on the feet first. The simplest of the exercises is to take a towel roll and place it under your knee and have the muscles of the thigh push down into the towel roll and hold that for a few seconds and then relax. Do that about ten to twenty times on each leg always starting on the knee with less pain.
