why not bring back bare knuckle mma.?

why wear gloves,it worked at the start of ufc.pat smith performed well with no gloves, makes grappling easier also

A few reasons...

1. It is one of the requirements for sanctioning, they already are using 4oz gloves, not really a lot of padding or doing much to increase the profile of the fist.

2. Most broken hands, not just that but broken skin and knuckles on the hands could lead to excessive bleeding (the punchers.

3. More likelihood of cutting an opponent, more matches stopped primarily due to cut. (Something no one likes anyway, more fights lost on technicality of a cut then on skill. it is the reason Pride doesn't allow elbows).

4. Aside from sanctioning requirements, it makes protection for both fighters a little easier, and takes it away from looking bad. Trust me, if I hit you with my bare fist, or with my 4 oz gloves you won't notice a whole lot of difference. The gloves are small, makes the fist slightly bigger but are still small enough to not provide you with a lot of protection from blows. (With 16oz Boxing Gloves you can pretty much cover your whole face and head with your gloves, MMA is totally different and you can't rely on the same style of boxing guard with 4oz gloves.

The gloves that you wear now a days doesn't hinder grappling in the slightest, most of the palm is open, the fingers are open, your thumb is open, you have damn near the full range of movement with your fingers,(and most importantly the thumb) and all you need as far as grappling is grip. I would argue that gloves somewhat help you in grappling as they can absorb some of your opponents sweat.

Gloves actually help you hit harder than you can with your fist as well, with less risk of injury. Also how do you figure Pat Smith did good in MMA? During the period of no gloves he won only one match by KO. (The rest he lost by submission or won by guillotine) and he went 3-7 in bare knuckle days.

(in case you were wondering Gloves were mandatory in UFC 14, in 1997. 1 win by K.O. 2 by submission and a damn long string of losses. Hardly what I would call "performing well"

Pat Smith's record from that time period...

I don't think there needs to be barenuckles anymore, it is a legitimate sport now and doesn't need to be a gladitorial toughman competetion. 90 percent of the competetors in those early UFCs wouldn't last 3 rounds with the a current MMA fighter, with or without gloves.
