How would these martial artists do in a ufc-style mma fight?
If these martial artists trained in mma, in addition to what they already know, how well would they do? These people are all in their primes.
- Bruce Lee.
- Muhammad Ali.
- Hulk Hogan
- Jean-Claude Van Dam
- Steven Segal
Would any of these martial artists make it in mma?
I'm going to answer this question two different ways. First how they would do with their normal skills, then if they trained in MMA.
Bruce Lee - Would do very well if he could keep the opponent standing up. He did have some basic grappling skills but nothing that compares to modern ground skills since the introduction of the Gracies.
Lee trained in MMA, I have no doubt that he would be the champion of his weight division. He might not remain undefeated as often in MMA luck can turn a match. Lee constantly looked for ways to better himself and his training and he would have brought that intensity and focus to MMA as well. He was also famous for the amount of power he could generate and at very short distances. I've never seen anyone generate the amount of explosive power Lee was capable of. Imagine him in someone's guard raining down blows. He might not win all matches but he would definitely be a champion of his weight division, and would keep that position, even if in and out, for as long as he decided to fight, or until he got too old to do it any more.
Muhammad Ali - You would think he would obviously dominate if he were standing up, that might be true, but often times he would wear out his opponent. Ali was trained to go 12 rounds, since most MMA goes for shorter periods, UFC for example only five rounds, he might not do as well, as with that amount of time his normal strategy wouldn't be as effective. Obviously if he went to the ground it would be over very quickly as he was a boxer.
If Ali were trained in MMA, he would be a beast. I could easily see him winning his weight divisions often, assuming that his training gave him adequate ground skills. His major advantage was his speed on his feet, so he would likely prefer to stand up if possible and if he could manage to control wrestlers and grapplers, he would do very well.
Hulk Hogan - As a wrastler Hogan has tremendous endurance and strength. His only problem would be taking full force blows, as even though the WWF style wrastlers get beat on a lot, they rarely take blows that are meant to hurt or knock out. His ground work wouldn't be up to snuff compared to modern MMA, and he doesn't have any real striking experience. So though he might win a few matches, I don't think he would do well in his original state.
Hogan with Mma Training would be a different story. He would probably focus on ground skills primarily and with proper training would be pretty good at it. Based on his body type, his striking would be fairly limited and if someone could keep him on his feet and match his strength they would have a good chance to beat him. Over all with MMA training I would see Hogan as a decent MMA, but probably not often the champion of his weight division, but possibly winning a lot of fights.
Jean-Claude Van Dam - Current skills (in his prime) he would be destroyed. He has very little Martial Arts Training and most of his flexibility comes from ballet. Even having continued his martial arts and stepped it up for his newer movies, he still doesn't have the type of training that would allow him to survive in MMA.
Were he trained in MMA, who knows really, as no one has ever seen him close enough to make an educated guess. However I would worry about his lack of discipline. He is well known for drinking hard, picking up girls, and partying. Sure some MMA are known for that as well, but those are usually the type that are already born killers. Van Dam looks good on film, but personally I don't think he has the stuff to make it in MMA. (BTW I am a Van Dam film fan, so I'm not just bashing him).
Steven Segal - I've trained with Steve and he is one scary SOB. The fact that a guy that big is that good at Aikido is almost a crime. Now the problem with him being in MMA (in his prime) is that he could whoop some tail but most of the techniques he is trained in (in order to take someone down in an MMA fight) would be illegal in MMA. Aikido is best used on someone who is a striker and not good at groundwork. Someone who is good at grappling would often be able to get out of, or counter a basic Aikido technique. Someone who has a high level of skill in Aikido would generally resort to small joint manipulation in such an event or turning the technique in a way that would normally break the bone if proper ukemi wasn't used, and those are illegal in most MMA, so he would be hugely handicapped with his style. Although his endurance would be pretty good, his stamina for taking the hard blows and being taken to the ground would be pretty bad. Also his ground work would be horrible so he would have a big weakness there.
If Segal trained in MMA who knows really. Aikido skills don't translate well to MMA as they are two separate entities entirely. The training for one has little to do with the training for the other. There's no doubt that Segal has the ability to master complex fighting techniques, but it would be hard to say how well he could be as a striker or a ground technician. Based on how well he picked up Aikido, he shouldn't have a problem learning the ground work, then if he built up his stamina he's be pretty good with it. But striking could still be a weakness for him.
