Indian Miniatures - Nude Females, Natural Nudes in Rajasthan Paintings
In the medieval period, the Indian miniature painters had attempted depicting female nudes.
Miniature Painting style had evolved in India before centuries. It carried with it the influence of other cultures, too. The miniature artists depicted their art on paper, the ivory articles, wooden furniture, and other pieces made from leather and marble. They used even cloth and walls as their canvasses. For conveying reality that was beyond specific vantage point, the Indian artists employed multiple perspectives while doing their work on various mediums.
The Kangra Miniature painting of Pahari School, practiced mainly during the 18th century, was influenced by the Mughals. However it had retained its distinctiveness. To make the paintings naturalistic, the artists used the colors extracted from minerals, vegetables and possessing enamel-like luster. Themes were taken from the books like, Gita Govinda and Baramasa of Keshavdas. Lord Krishna and Radha as eternal lovers were portrayed rejoicing the moments of love. The Kangra style of miniature paintings is known for portraying the feminine charm with its natural grace.
The artists who created Indian miniatures used various materials to give their products a unique appearance.The materials the Indian artists of medieval period used were locally produced one. They used, minerals, vegetables, precious stones, indigo, conch shells, pure gold and silver were used to detail the masterly executed drawings. The themes they depicted, too, were rich in culture and deep in meaning. Among the popular themes were the depiction of incidences from the scriptures like Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagvata Purana. They illustrated the scenes from books like Rasikpriya and Rasamanjiri.
There were several schools of paintings in India. It was the medieval period. The painters of seventeenth and eighteenth century of India had rich subjects and innovative ideas to paint. These schools are known as Kangda School of Paintings, Phad Style of Paintings and Rajasthan style of Paintings.
