Harper Lee's To Kill A mockingbird: What were some situations where people oppsed to reading it?
Is the N word a good reason not to read it? What effect has the book put on people? Have any school boards denied to having the high schoolers read the book? Any pros and cons about the book are welcome. Thank You very much.
the word ni-g-g-er is a nick name used by the Dutch slave traders who kidnapped and shipped Nigerians. So, ni-g-g-er was short for Nigerian.
There is also a very famous song that uses the very same word and is a classic because the word ni-g-g-er was also used as an affectionate term in the slave culture, and if you think I'm crazy, its because you haven't studied black history.
The book, "To Kill A Mocking Bird" was written when the word was still used quite frequently and it wasn't until recently in our history that it has become like a four letter word.
To Kill A Mocking Bird is about a brave Caucasian attorney willing to sway the justice system on their prejudice of an innocent black man who was accused of raping a white woman.
This woman was coerced into lying because the man responsible said he would kill her if she didn't. This same man harassed the attorney's little girl at one point and the movie is an Acadamy Award Winning movie.
I got to meet David Brock, who plaid the black man accused, and he it was an honor.
The people who refuse to read American Literature that opens the minds of people against racism will use any excuse not to have their children learn racial intolerance... So, they use the N word as an excuse to cut people off from learning mind altering knowledge that challenges us to step outside of the box and be the courageous nation that Benjamin Franklin wanted us to become.
