equipment for starting ice hockey?
I need help in making sure when I buy my pads for my beginning ice hockey class coming up that they are the right kind. I already have my skates and know how to get the right kind of stick, but I need help with the following protective equipment. I need to know how to make sure it will fit properly without making me uncomfortable and will still give me good protection:
Jock/groin cup
garter belt
Shin Pads
elbow pads
chest pads
neck guard
pants
helmet
also, will a mouthpiece I used in another sport (Martial Arts, only covers the upper jaw of my mouth) be a good protector for ice hockey or should I get one built for hockey (covers both my top and bottom jaw)?
Jock-just buy one to fit your waist size. Unless you're a goaltender a standard cup will more than suffice.
Garter belt- get a hockey-specific Compression Short instead; Itech and Under Armour both make good ones (it's a cup/garter/jock combo).
Shin guards- On a lot of the big-box online retailers (total hockey, hockey geeks, Great Skate, Hockey Life) they will have fitting guides as to what size to buy. You'll need to measure yourself. The taller you are, the larger the size you'll take. 15" is common. If you can, try them on with your skates on to make sure they fit properly.
Elbow pads- just make sure the forearm protection doesn't leave any open spots on your forearm (should protect to where your gloves are).
Neck guard- buy by neck size (the same way you buy a dress shirt).
Pants- waist size; make sure they're long enough so you don't have any exposure above the knee (the shin guards and pants should overlap).
Helmet- get one that fits your head (you want snug...not tight; if you shake your head it shouldn't move around). Many of them are adjustable (don't require tools). Try one on at a local rink/shop if that option exists; you'll want some kind of facial protection (in fact it may be a requirement); if you have to wear a cage get one (they're easy to install); if you are going the visor route get some anti-fog spray and keep a towel with you to wipe it down when it fogs up (because it will).
Mouthpiece- you only need something to cover the top part of your mouth; Shock Doctor makes a good one (the boil and bite variety) that has concussion protection built in. Your existing one will probably work fine.
