No boxing experience, but I have a boxing fight tomorrow, help please?
I'm 19, slim but muscular, and consdier myself pretty tough. BUT I have never been in a real fight and I have zero boxing experience, never even been hit before. This guy and I are having a fight tomorrow (not a real one, just for fun), and we're wearing Boxing Gloves, body and head shots allowed only, no kicks or grappling. Basically backyard boxing rules. He has alot of Karate Sparring experience and BJJ experience, I ahve zero in anything.
I've been trying to shadow box a bit to practice. Any tips or anything? What should I do to win? We're more going for Target Practice, not so much trying to knock the sh**t out of each other. The one thing I hav going for me is I'm alot taller than him. Any advice? I don't think I'm totally screwed, but I could be wrong.
so, you learn swimming by diving in the deep end and see how it goes?
You're in trouble. For starters; your hands. Wearing boxing gloves is not like having airbags or such. Punching hurts if you do it wrong. But you're about to find that out. Hope you do some type of wrapping, but not sure if I'd advise it, chances are you wrap these the wrong way cuz you lack the practice.
You're not wearing any Head Gear then? No belts or cups? Mouth Guard? Sounds like a fun night.
You're taller... ok, so you may want to jab and dance a bit. Him being a karate dude (what belt? what style) means most his punches are going to be linear. Straight to you, and loads to the body. Especially if he is a kyukushin fighter = they do not allow face punches. But then again you are just brawling.
Keeping hands up at all times = dah. But you wont. Not even experienced fighters do this or have the endurance to keep doing this. Elbows in = yes. Look into a philly shell style defense for those body shots, but if he starts doing upper cuts, better hope you had your teeth clenched and are wearing a mouth guard.
If you are not fighting in a ring, and have no boundaries, then my advise is to try and keep distance with an effective jab. But keep a low stance, move move move. Look to move away from his power hand - not to it. Dance circles around the dude. If he comes in, either clinch and push him off you. Or see about landing a hook to the body - first time boxers are usually more eager protecting their face than the body. By the way = that was a hint for you as well.
And yes; chances are you are wrong, and will be totally screwed. Esp without the proper protection.
