Is Eskrima Fighting Style effective without weapons?
I know it teaches you first the use of weapons but it continues on unarmed techniques, my point is how effective is it for unarmed combat (and especially punches and grapples since I know that it uses a lot of kicks). I was wandering why most people train in eskrima as supplement and not as primary Martial Art (usually they choose escrima after kung fu).
"Eskrima" is a very effective system for when you are unarmed.
When I took my first FMA group I was like "When is somebody going to attack me when I'm holding a stick?!". Through practice I realized that to have a good defense you first need to understand the offense.
This means that the footwork - and to a certain degree the hand motions - are the same when you are holding a stick or not. Most FMA groups teach "You are the weapon!" - not the stick. What happens when you drop it? Are you meant to run off? Or revert to another art? What a waste of time that would be.
When you're training to defend yourself against stick and blades all the time punches and kicks feel less daunting. They move slower. They do less damage. They have less range. Ofcourse, they are still effective.
I train in a style where my GM has Masters of other styles (Kung Fu, Silat, MMA, karate etc) come to the Philippines to train with him. Invariably thet try techniques from other systems and he will counter them with his FMA knowledge. He has not trained grappling for example but can apply his concepts to a mount of a rear choke. On the floor or standing it's no problem as IMO All Martial Arts are connected as we are all human.
So, as the early poster commented on. Yes - it is an effective style without weapons but you do need somebody to show you the concepts and to be able to understand them.
