cotton or man made cloth, army says cotton, backpackers say man made, Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
ok i have asked about uniforms and sports bra and what cloth they should be, well the military says cotton is best and civilians say man made cloth. some soldiers say its cooler and more comfertable while backpackers say cotton kills. could anyone tell me what if i should get cloth or spandex and other man made cloth clothing?
It depends.
Cotton absorbs moisture well and is comfortable to wear. But when it gets wet, it loses all of its insulating properties. It also doesn't dry fast. For warmer weather, cotton is a great cloth because it is comfortable and it will absorb your sweat which will slowly evaporate from the cloth; cooling you.
In cooler weather however, cotton kills. It will not provide any insulation when it gets wet. If you have cotton on during the winter and it gets wet; you will not be able to get warm. The wet cotton will actually pull heat away from your body instead of providing insulation.
When it comes to cooler weather, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool believer in wool no matter what ewe say. Sorry; that was bad. Wool will still insulate you even when it gets wet and it is a great choice for cold weather. The drawbacks to wool: it is heavy when it is wet and it can be uncomfortable to wear. I like to wear polypropylene long johns underneath wool to make it more comfortable; and polypro also wicks moisture away from your skin.
