Do colleges like to see combat sports on applications?
Boxing or MMA, for example. Boxing is the one for this question. Would 4-5 years of experience, including fights, be a good thing? I imagine the administration frowning on the combat aspect and the whole head injury thing, even if the person is fine. Is it better left unsaid for all schools, or just the better ones?
I see absolutely no reason why you would not put this on your college application. In fact, it may even make the subject of a good essay.
Having done *anything* with such devotion is a plus re: college admissions. I wouldn't worry about an admissions officer's personal feelings on the sport. I mean, they admit people who've been in the military, who've done Martial Arts, who've been wrestlers, who've done snowboarding, rock climbing, American football, rugby - none of those are exactly safe, and many of them are combat sports or involve combat. It's not which sport you did. It's that you were interested enough in it, perhaps even passionate about it, to really focus on it. And that's a very good thing.
List it. And consider if you can make it into an essay topic, using the ideas of why you started, what you learned from it, how it's made you who you are today. Keep it personal. Don't be defensive about it. Keep it personal. What it means to *you*.
BTW, my cousin is a Black Belt in several martial arts forms. He had no problem getting into the colleges he applied to.
