HELP!!KARATE OR Tae Kwon DO OR OTHER?
well im 13 years old 148 pounds and i dont know what will suit me better.i cant kick really high and the tae kwon do place is expensive, but they have a ton of experience. one instructor has a gold medal in the olympics and all instructors have over a 5th degree Black Belt. another is a 6th degree black belt, is a personal trainer and knows chi stix exercises. it doesnt get any better then that. i like karate alot better though. the karate place has one sensei and the tae kwon do place has 4 instructors. but he has alot of experience. also the karate place is half the price of the tae kwon do place. or are there any other styles i might like.
I currently train in TKD but in a non-branch system with an amazing instructor however that doesn't mean I'm going to be biased in my comment.
You mentioned that the instructors have a 5th degree black belt and a gold medal in olympics. Also, that the Tae Kwon Do place is expensive. This seems to me that this TKD dojang you visited is focused more on competition and trophies than more of your well being.
And let me tell you something about belts. My instructor trained in traditional TKD for 22 years and he is still a 3rd Dan. However, this is because of the "politics" that are involved between him and the 'grandmasters'. Unfortunately, these Dans you speak of are a game of politics and nowadays the belt that is worn around your waist for Martial Arts has little meaning passed down from political-money hungry masters.
So please, avoid the TKD dojang you visited, not all schools are like that. Though they seem to advertise more experience... it's still a marketing tool. In the end, you will be paying more than what you need to.
You speak of a karate place that you enjoy. Try it out (free try if they allow) and if you don't like the instructor's way of teaching then go to other schools.
Since you're 13 years old I'm assuming you want something more fast paced. If you just want to rush in and start doing competition based martial arts, go for American kickboxing/boxing/wrestling/Brazilian Jujitsu...
I give you props for taking one of the more traditional arts--it's just really hard to find good teachers.
Keep searching, you'll find your calling.
