Several questions about Martial Arts?

1) What aew the main differences between kendo and aikido?

2) I'm 21, female, do I need any physical preparation for starting practicing kendo? (I'm not a very sporty person and I'm also not thin)

3) What martial arts did Japanese samurai use in the past?

4) What (besides kendo) would you recommend that requires katana/bokken usage?

1. Kendo is a martial sport using a bamboo sword (called Shinai) by tying four pieces of bamboo together. They also wear head, chest, and hand protective gears. The practitioners try to score points by striking the target areas such as the top of the head, the sides of the head, the throat, the hands/wrists, and both sides of the ribs areas. No other hands/legs techniques are allow to use on the opponents but in Japanese police kendo, leg sweeps are allow. This is the only martial sport in Japan that both the men and women can train with and play against each other but they have separated divisions in tournaments.

The use of bamboo sword was first recorded in 1559 by Hikita Kagekane of the Shinkage-ryu School. It was called Fukuro Shinai which is a long, sword-shaped leather bag with four pieces of thin bamboo tied up inside. It was changed to the modern shape of four thin pieces of bamboo tied up by nylon string with leather handle wrap and sword-tip wraps.

Master Ueshiba who combined jujitsu and katana movements to create Aikido. Most of their techniques are empty hands but there are also Jo (4 ft stick) and bokken techniques at the advance level.

2. Find a good school with a good instructor and start training. Nothing else matter.

3. The Japanese samurai use katana, Yari (spear), Naginata (sabre with a long handle), bow & arrows, and even muskets.

4. Iaido use both shinken (live blade) and bokken (Wooden Sword) for practice. There are also Battodo and Iaijutsu that use live blades and practice test cutting on objects. There are many ryuha and school that teach Iaido. Do a search on Iaido in the internet and you will find them. But use common sense to pick a school.

Hope this could help and good luck on you Martial Art journey!
