Could Judo beat BJJ in a street fight?
Could Judo beat BJJ in a street fight? If the Judo guy has really good submission defense and only trains in Judo.
Dear lord I go away for a few days and this section gets even worst with nutriders...
"BJJ trains every aspect of Street Fighting.." Really like takedowns, striking, weapon defense, defense to biting and eye gouges, multiple opponents? Oh wait, they don't train any of those things... 90% of BJJ class is on the ground, with about 10% on takedowns. Some schools do BASIC covers and defenses to strikes to close the distance.
Here is what you have to look at, first off there is no definate either way.
First off whomever controls the takedown is in a HUGE advantage to begin with, they get to have dominant position. Being that you can also easily break bones, cause concussions, and collapse lungs with throws and slams, and that they spend much more time on takedowns, you would have to give an advantage to Judoka.
Of course, it depends, are you assuming that both of them know the other is a BJJ/Judo guy, are or they strangers. The element of surprise can work in both people's favor.
If they know what the other has it could be a stalemate, or could go either way. I know many BJJ players who just prefer to pull guard against good Judo players in competetion out of fear of getting thrown or slammed. Pulling guard in a street setting is a bad idea, you put you back on much harder ground, and your opponent can still hit you in the face, and have leverage.
A good Judo player is going to have submission defense against a good BJJ player, knows what he will be going for, and has a solid base. It makes him hard to sweep, and allows him to stay in the pocket punching from up top. (Wonder why wrestlers with basic submission defense can beat the tar out of BJJ players, they control the takedown, and have a good base to keep from being swept)
If they don't know each other is a skilled BJJ/Judo player then it can go a lot of ways.
The BJJ guy is more willing to stand up and engage someone whom they think they have the grappling advantage, not realizing someone is a Judoka means they will tie up and most likely get thrown. If they manage to get past the stun and avoid injury, they will still have to start in a bad position.
Keep in mind most Judo throws end up with the thrower in a dominant position, or still standing. A competetive Judoka actually has a great advantage because by nature they will go to the ground with their throw landing into a pin or submission set up.
However, an overconfident Judoka could just as easily get caught sleeping with a weak takedown, or by putting himself in a position that he wouldn't put himself against another grappler. He could be set up into a submission before he has time to realize that the guy he is fighting actually knows what he is doing.
Natural ability comes in to play a lot as well, as does experience levels, athleticism, aggressiveness etc.
There are Judo guys and BJJ guys who by simple nature can hit hard, all those could be moot if one of them knocks the other out with a punch.
To answer your question, yes, there are many ways for a Judo person to beat a BJJ person in a street fight. There are also ways for the BJJ person to beat a Judo person.
In the end it matters more about the actual practitioner then the art, and luck plays a large factor in it as well. No one art will win out every time.
Helio lost to Kimura, possibly the best Judoka there ever was. But keep in mind he fought a draw, and won a match against another Judoka before Kimura.
Rickson lost to Judoka Ron Tripp by getting tossed around in a Sambo match.
However Royce beat Remco Parduel a Judoka who outweighed him by a 100lbs.
I wouldn't have used the Karo example, he hasn't lost to a BJJ guy yet, and has never been submitted. He has beaten two BJJ guys (Matt Serra and Nick Diaz) but by decision. For what it is worth.
Gamburyan also has never been submitted, but he has lost because of injury to Nate Diaz, however he got the injury by slamming Nate...
Karo and Manny aren't the best examples.
(edit)
Darb D: I know you enjoy using multiple accounts to thumbs people down that don't agree with you, but you might not want to be so blatant about it by giving yourself the exact same amount of thumbs up.
By the way, I laugh my @ss off knowing that you are logging into different accounts, then finding the question and thumbing me down... why don't you use your other 4 accounts and make it 8 like have been doing... what a joke.
