What is the difference between a ATA blackbelt and a great blackbelt?
It took me 5 years to get my 1st degree Black Belt and at ATA karate they get thier second degree Black Belts in 2 years.
First off the Ata Black belts are not recognized by any, and yes I mean any, official organizations that matter. They are only good inside the ATA world which is a business, not a Martial Art.
Secondly we have ATA schools all around our area and we are one of the few real Karate schools left. Over the past 10 years since the ATA came in to our area we have had many of their black belts come to us to get training because it simply costs way to much to move up in rank with the ATA. Some had decent technique but most were mid level in technique compared to authentic martial art systems. Regardless of their technical level they had no understanding of the following required areas for real black belts in an authentic martial art system:
1. Application of the techniques outside of limited ATA rule sets.
2. No understanding of how to develop proper power nor the physics associated with techniques in authentic Martial Arts.
3. Not to many of them had ever really been hit before which made them freeze up when they got hit by a good shot.
4. Very limited mindset. They never taught them how to grab, joint lock, throw, submit, sweep or trap their opponent which made them very easy targets for authentic black belts of authentic martial arts.
5. Belief that they were really learning Tae Kwon Do when in fact it was some made up system by a guy who was kicked out of the WTF for lying, cheating and claiming to be higher rank / more important than he truly was.
6. Idolizing a guy by calling him the Eternal Grandmaster who is considered world wide as a fraud and businessman...not a Martial Artist.
There are many more but the ATA specializes in sales tactics. In that area they have master ranks but at a true dojo you will not be sold a belt, sold training or even sold some stupid upgrade program.
A real good Sensei will train their students very hard knowing that if they do not teach them properly then they are lying to them about the ability to defend themselves. I have friends who are ATA black belts, some of them 4th dan and up, who could not fight any legitimate black belt and hold their ground but there are a very few in the ATA who are decent...however almost all of them came from other systems with better training in their background before joining the mcdojang world of buying a belt.
