Is it true that Eskrima/Kali is superior to European and Japanese Sword arts?
I heard it was developed to counter European Fencing and Japanese Kenjutsu due to the historical origins of the sword art.
(Used to repulse Spanish and Japanese invaders)
I would like to know if this is true. Thank you.
Also, what is it really called? Eskrima or Kali?
What are the practitioners called? Kalistas or Eskrimadors?
Not really, it is extremely effective in close quarters. But overall, it can't really compete with the Fencing rapier/dagger combo and Japanese Katana when it comes to reach advantage. I think the perception that it is superior to other weapon styles comes from the fact that unlike fencing and kendo which have been watered down into sports competition arts today, Kali is still pretty much taught primarily as a combat/fighting art and therefore has not been stripped of the more lethal techniques and is usually still taught as close to the original fighting styles as were practiced by the ancient Kali practitioners. But against authentic Kenjutsu practitioners or expert Rapier and Dagger maestros of Europe, I'd say it would be pretty much even, with Kali having a slight disadvantage of reach, since most Kali styles today favors short swords and daggers. Although a two handed Filipino sword called a Kampilan wielded in ancient times may be able to hold it's own, but sadly, nobody I know in the Philippines teaches how to use this ancient fighting weapon anymore.
As for your other question. To my knowledge, Kali is believed to refer to the ancient fighting style of the ancient Filipino warriors who used a short sword called a Kalis. Warriors like Sultan Kudarat and Datu Lapu Lapu were allegedly expert with this art and used it to repel Spanish invaders. Eskrima was developed during the Spanish colonial occupation of the Philippines, Eskrima is actually derived from the Spanish word Escrima which means to fence or fencing. Eskrima is a hybrid style combining the techniques of Kali and the Spanish Rapier and Dagger fighting techniques and was practiced by Spanish-Filipino gentlemen in the 18th and 19th century Philippines. Kali and Eskrima practitioners are referred to as Kalisadores and Eskrimadores, a sign of Spanish influence in Philippine culture and language.
